Employee Assistance

Blue Door staff have many years experience providing assistance to staff and their families in health, education and heavy industry settings.

How employee assistance programs work

Most organisations have an arrangement with a support organisation for their employees or their families to have up to 3 free and confidential sessions a year to discuss work or private issues that are affecting an employee’s capacity to be fully focussed at work. In complex cases, arrangements can be made to have more sessions.

  • Self referral
You can contact a Blue Door Practitioner directly through email or telephone.

  • Supervisor referral
A supervisor may insist on a series of sessions for a worker they are concerned about

  • Union referral
A Union representative may assist and employee or a family member to attend a counselling session.

  • Confidentiality
All information shared in sessions is confidential unless there are issues of safety in the workplace. Any non confidential circumstances will be fully discussed with the employee at the appointment.

  • Counselling
Our practitioners provide counselling for employees and families on personal or work related issues. We also have capacity to work with addictions affecting work and home. Professional supervision and coaching.

  • Workplace Communication
Our staff have particular expertise in providing training and support in workplace communication, mediation and conflict resolution.

  • Worker’s Compensation Issues
If you have an accident at work, it can be helpful to discuss your situation with a Blue Door Practitioner. We can usually provide some tips for dealing with reactions to workplace accidents and help people get back to work and home life quickly. We provide counselling for rehabilitation, psychological and social recovery. We also provide orientation to and support through Worker’s compensation claims.

  • Conflict Resolution
Blue Door staff have post graduate qualifications in conflict resolution, anger management and mediation to help settle conflict quickly.

  • Critical Incident Response
Blue Door staff have years of experience in responding to critical incidents. We are able to support the minimization of trauma responses and assist recovering from work related trauma. Of note is our attendance to the needs of all staff and families during the Beaconsfield mine rescue in 2006. The OH&S Manager at the time has written “Personnel have reported feeling comfortable with Blue Door practitioners and comfortable to refer friends and family members for services. They report that the contact with Blue Door practitioners is helpful to manage issues at work and at home. When on site, Blue Door workers have shown capacity to fit with the culture in the workplace and communicate well with a range of personnel.”

After the rescue, our staff assisted the organisation to develop an innovative ongoing psychological safety plan for personnel in high hazard circumstances. The programme was a finalist in the 2009 Tasmanian Workcover Safety Awards in the Best Workplace Health and Wellbeing section.

  • Career Change
We have an experienced career consultant who can assist with career decision making, places to seek employment and relevant training options. Our service includes job seeking skills, resume preparation, position description responses, and application letters. We are also able to help with interview techniques and positive outcomes from unsuccessful applications.
Our services can be provided at your worksite, in our rooms or another suitable location.
